Why Wellness Exams Matter
Just like people, pets benefit from regular checkups. Wellness exams give us a chance to catch problems before they become serious, often before your pet shows any signs of illness. Early detection leads to more effective treatment and better outcomes.
From young puppies and kittens to senior pets, preventive care is key to ensuring a longer, healthier, and happier life.
What to expect during a Wellness Exam?
At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we prioritize your pet’s emotional well-being just as much as their physical health. Guided by Fear Free© principles, we strive to make every visit as calm and comfortable as possible:
Here’s how we make every visit as calm and comfortable as possible:
1. Pre-Visit Questionnaire
Before your appointment, we ask you to complete a short Pre-Visit Questionnaire. This helps us understand your pet’s behavior, anxiety triggers, and stress level on the way to the clinic and during previous vet visits.
2. Low-Stress Arrival
We’ll use calming techniques, gentle handling, and species-specific accommodations (like separate waiting areas or pheromone diffusers) to ease your pet into the visit.
3. Tailored Physical Exam
Our team adjusts the pace and approach based on your pet’s comfort, including breaks, treats, and examination in your lap or on the floor if needed.
4. Preventive Diagnostics & Vaccines
Depending on your pet’s life stage, we may recommend fecal testing, bloodwork, heartworm screening, or vaccine boosters.
5. Customized Care Plan & Support
You’ll leave with a personalized plan for your pet’s ongoing health, plus plenty of time to ask questions.
How Often Should My Pet Have a Wellness Exam?
Puppies & Kittens: Every 3-4 weeks until completely vaccinated.
Adult Pets (1–7 years): At least once a year
Senior Pets (7+ years): Every 6 months
Pets age faster than humans, so regular exams are vital for catching changes early—even if your pet seems healthy on the outside.
Benefits of Preventive Care
Preventive care isn’t just about vaccines and checkups—it’s about catching problems early, avoiding unnecessary suffering, and giving your pet the best possible quality of life.
Here’s how routine wellness exams benefit both pets and their people:
Early Detection = Better Outcomes
Many conditions—like kidney disease, arthritis, dental disease, or diabetes—can develop silently. Regular exams and screening tests help us catch these issues early, when they’re easier and less expensive to treat.
Stronger Bond with the Vet Team
Routine visits help build familiarity and trust between your pet and our team. That makes future visits (and even emergencies) less stressful for everyone.
Better Comfort, Mobility & Longevity
Preventing pain, managing chronic issues early, and monitoring weight can add years to your pet’s life—and more good days to every year.
A Personalized Health Plan
Your pet’s needs change as they age. We help you stay one step ahead with age-appropriate care, behavior guidance, and nutrition support.
Oral Health Monitoring
Dental disease is one of the most common (and painful) health problems in pets. We monitor oral health at every visit and recommend cleanings or home care before issues worsen.
Peace of Mind for You
Knowing your pet is healthy—or that you’re taking early action when something’s off—gives you the confidence you’re doing what’s best for them.
Additional Preventive Services
We often pair wellness exams with other preventive services to provide complete care:
FAQs
My pet seems healthy—do they still need an exam?
Yes! Pets are masters at hiding pain or illness. Regular exams help catch problems before they become visible or severe.
Do indoor-only pets need preventive care?
Absolutely. Indoor pets still need vaccines, parasite prevention, and annual checkups to monitor for age-related issues.
Will I get lab results the same day?
Some quick tests (like heartworm screens) are done in-house with same-day results. However, early detection bloodwork is sent to our trusted external lab, and results are usually available within 24 hours.
Can I combine a wellness exam with vaccines or other services?
Yes, wellness visits are the perfect time to update vaccines, refill medications, or discuss any changes you’ve noticed.
How do you keep anxious pets calm?
Guided by Fear Free© principles, we use gentle handling, soothing environments, and your pre-visit questionnaire to tailor each experience for your pet’s comfort.

I hope Dr.Lisa keeps up the excellent service and continue to always treat all her customers and their animals with patience, love, compassion and kindness . I have more kitties to bring to this clinic and they have my continued support.Posted on Google Judit EstradaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Huge thank you to the amazing team here! I completely messed up and accidentally booked our appointment for a week out, but when I showed up yesterday by mistake, they were so sweet and squeezed us right in. I brought my cat Maki because she hadn’t been eating. Everyone was so incredibly gentle and kind with her. They took quick care of her, figured out she was running a fever, and got her treated. Maki is already doing so much better, acting like herself, and finally eating again! It also meant the world to me that I could call back later with follow-up questions about her behavior without feeling like a bother. I'm just so grateful they made room for me and Maki.Posted on Google Janie StrootTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
