A Simple Step That Could Bring Your Pet Home
Microchipping
Every year, thousands of pets go missing—and without ID, many are never reunited with their families. Microchipping gives your pet a permanent form of identification that can’t fall off or fade. At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we offer safe, quick, and affordable microchip implantation during any visit.

Why Microchipping is Important
- 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point in their life
- Microchipped pets are 20x more likely to be returned home
- Collars and tags can break or fall off—but microchips last a lifetime
- Most shelters and vet clinics scan for chips when a pet is found
Whether your pet is young, adventurous, or simply accident-prone, microchipping is one of the best ways to protect them.
Microchipping Process
The procedure is fast, safe, and no more painful than a routine vaccine:
- A tiny microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) is injected under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades.
- No anesthesia or surgery is required—it can be done during a regular visit or combined with spay/neuter or vaccinations. A local numbing agent may be used if your pet needs it.
- Your pet’s unique microchip ID number is linked to your contact information.
We use Fear Free techniques to minimize stress, including gentle restraint, treats, and soothing handling.
Registration & Recovery
The microchip itself only stores a number—it must be registered to you to be effective. We’ll walk you through:
- Completing your online registration
- Keeping your contact info up to date
- How recovery works if your pet is found (any vet or shelter can scan the chip and contact you immediately)
Registration is typically free for life or includes a small one-time fee, depending on the brand of microchip.

Microchipping FAQs
Is microchipping painful for my pet?
We take every step to keep your pet comfortable. At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we apply a local numbing agent to the area before inserting the chip, and use Fear Free handling to keep stress low. Most pets don’t even notice it’s happening.
Does the microchip have GPS tracking?
No. Microchips do not track your pet’s location. Instead, they store a unique ID number that can be scanned by a vet or shelter to access your contact info from the microchip registry.
How soon should I register the chip?
Immediately! We’ll provide clear instructions and help you register the microchip during your visit. An unregistered chip can’t help reunite you with your pet.
What if I move or change my phone number?
You’ll need to update your information with the microchip registry. It’s quick and easy to do online—and we can remind you how at any time.
Does my pet need to be sedated for a microchip?
No sedation is needed. It’s a fast, safe procedure that can be done while your pet is awake, even during a routine exam or vaccine visit.
What Customers Say
EXCELLENT Based on 75 reviews Posted on Ricky ButlerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very friendly people! Did a great job! Glad I brought Drago to be treated! Now I will have to bring Max! Thank y'all!Posted on Holly CrossTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr. Lisa and staff are very friendly. My little guy is just under 15 lbs and about 12 inches tall. The doc and tech got down on the floor on his level for the entire exam. My boy was quite happy to be held and hugged and offered a treat throughout the exam. He did briefly make himself at home when he got out of the exam room and trotted through the back of the clinic without a care. He was exploring....not escaping.Posted on April WhiteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great staff! Very caring and patient. Everyone there will make sure you are comfortable with the care they give your pet. I wish I could give a 10 star rating.Posted on Ray HeinrichTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent first visit. The Vet was knowledgeable, empathetic, answered all my questions, and explained everything in detail. When I got to the office I was really frazzled because the community cat I was trying to bring in was late for her morning meal and I barely had time to arrive late for my appointment. The person running the front desk was understanding, friendly, and put me at ease. When we were talking at the end of the appointment I learned that she was the vet's mom. They aren't like family here, they ARE family. 😁 My previous vet for 20 years retired and recommended them highly and she was right. So I'm going to make them my new critter doctors and since I live with eight cats and a dog they'll probably see a fair bit of me.Posted on Paula FrenchTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I took my senior dog, Sebastian, to Garth Animal Hospital on Friday, January 9, 2026. From the moment we walked in, I knew I had made the right choice for care. Everyone was so kind and loving toward my old boy. The care he received was gentle, caring and professional. Thank you, Dr. Lisa and staff.Posted on Melissa McBrideTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. They were fast acting on getting me in with a litter of 6 puppies. Everything went smoothly and they didn't rush the appointment.Posted on NicoleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently did a drop off appointment for my dog and love that they don’t charge extra as I cannot take off a day from work, unfortunately. They gave my Little One excellent attention and care. They are very communicative with pricing and I really love how they reach out by text to give me updates, that is the best way instead of waiting for an email. I highly recommend this vet! I was going to another for 15 years and they recently switched how they work, so I searched for one close to me and I’m not disappointed at what I found! They will now be our forever vet!Posted on Erica WaltonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The whole staff was absolutely wonderful and prices that dont break the bank. Was worried when we adopted a dog that needed so much care but after taking her here all my worries disappeared
