Protect Your Pet, Comfortably and Safely
Vaccinations
Vaccines are a vital part of keeping your pet healthy—but we know that vet visits can be stressful for some animals. At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we follow Fear Free© practices to ensure that every vaccination is given with gentle handling, positive reinforcement, and your pet’s emotional comfort in mind.

Importance of Vaccinations
Vaccines protect your pet from serious and potentially fatal diseases like rabies, distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and feline leukemia—many of which have no cure. They also help prevent the spread of illness between pets and even to people in some cases (zoonotic diseases).
By staying current on vaccinations, you’re not only protecting your pet, but also your family and the community.
Vaccine Schedule by Species & Age
At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we offer safe, effective vaccines for:
- Dogs
- Cats
- Rabbits
- Ferrets
We tailor each vaccine plan based on your pet’s species, age, lifestyle, and exposure risk.
Starting Young: Puppy, Kitten, Rabbit & Ferret Vaccines
Young pets are especially vulnerable to disease, which is why we recommend starting their vaccination series as early as 7–9 weeks of age.
Typical schedules include:
Puppies & Kittens
- Initial vaccines at 7–9 weeks
- Boosters every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks
- Rabies vaccine by 12–16 weeks
- Follow-up boosters at 1 year, then every 1–3 years depending on lifestyle and vaccine type
Rabbits (if needed) and Ferrets
- Tailored plans depending on disease risk in your area (e.g., distemper for ferrets)
Our team will create a clear, easy-to-follow vaccine schedule just for your pet.
Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines

What to Expect During Vaccination Visit
Fear Free© Vaccine Experience
We aim to make every vaccine visit as stress-free as possible. Here’s how:
- Pre-visit calming recommendations (e.g., pheromone sprays, calming treats)
- Low-stress handling techniques during injection
- Distraction with treats, toys, or preferred handling position
- Split vaccine appointments for very anxious pets if needed
- You can stay with your pet throughout the process if preferred
Our goal is to keep your pet safe and emotionally secure.
Vaccine Safety & FAQs
Will my pet be sore or tired after vaccines?
Mild soreness or sleepiness is normal. If your pet seems uncomfortable, we’re happy to recommend supportive care—or space out vaccines for sensitive or fearful pets.
What if my pet is anxious about shots?
We follow Fear Free© principles and tailor each experience to your pet’s needs. We use treats, calm environments, and gentle handling—or can even break vaccines into multiple visits if needed.
Does my indoor pet need vaccines?
Yes. Indoor pets can still be exposed to viruses, parasites, or other animals. Rabies is required by law in Texas for all dogs and cats.
Can vaccines make my pet sick?
Side effects are rare and usually mild. We use the safest vaccine formulations available and monitor your pet closely. We will educate you on what to look out for after you leave during the appointment.

I have more kitties to bring to this clinic and they have my continued support.Posted on Google Judit EstradaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Huge thank you to the amazing team here! I completely messed up and accidentally booked our appointment for a week out, but when I showed up yesterday by mistake, they were so sweet and squeezed us right in. I brought my cat Maki because she hadn’t been eating. Everyone was so incredibly gentle and kind with her. They took quick care of her, figured out she was running a fever, and got her treated. Maki is already doing so much better, acting like herself, and finally eating again! It also meant the world to me that I could call back later with follow-up questions about her behavior without feeling like a bother. I'm just so grateful they made room for me and Maki.Posted on Google Janie StrootTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
