Compassionate, Specialized Care for Small & Exotic Pets

Exotics & Pocket Pets

Exotic pets need more than love—they need a veterinarian who understands their unique biology, behavior, and care requirements. At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we provide Fear Free©, species-specific care for a variety of exotic and pocket pets, offering both wellness and sick visits in a calm, low-stress environment.

Fear Free© Travel Tip: When bringing your exotic pet to the clinic, transport them in a safe, species-appropriate carrier. Use soft bedding, a hideaway space, or warm towels to help them feel secure. For reptiles or temperature-sensitive pets, pre-warm the car and avoid sudden changes in the environment. If you’re unsure how to transport your pet safely, give us a call—we’re happy to help.

Species we treat

We welcome a wide range of exotic pets, including:

  • Rabbits
  • Ferrets
  • Guinea pigs
  • Hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice
  • Chinchillas
  • Bearded dragons, geckos, and other reptiles
  • Turtles and tortoises

If you have a less common pet, just give us a call—we’re happy to discuss your needs and determine if we’re the right fit.

Unique Care Needs

Exotic pets have very specific husbandry, diet, and environmental requirements. What works for a cat or dog could be dangerous for a rabbit or reptile.

That’s why we offer:

  • Species-specific exam protocols
  • Handling techniques that reduce stress and injury
  • Fear Free© accommodations to help anxious or prey-driven species feel secure
  • Guidance on enclosure setup, temperature, lighting, and nutrition

Our team takes the time to educate you on everything from proper bedding to safe enrichment toys.

Common Health Issues

Because many exotic pets hide signs of illness, it’s important to act quickly if you notice anything unusual. Some of the most common issues we treat include:

  • Dental disease in rabbits and guinea pigs
  • Respiratory infections in ferrets and rodents
  • Nutritional deficiencies in reptiles
  • GI stasis and digestive issues
  • External and internal parasites
  • Skin problems or hair loss
  • Egg binding in reptiles

Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment.

Preventive Care for Exotics

Even if your exotic pet seems healthy, regular vet visits are essential. Preventive care includes:

  • Annual or semi-annual exams
  • Fecal parasite screening
  • Dental checks
  • Vaccinations for ferrets (e.g., distemper) and rabbits
  • Weight monitoring and diet evaluation
  • Behavior and environmental assessments

We’ll help create a care plan tailored to your pet’s species, age, and lifestyle.

Exotics & Pocket Pets FAQs

Do you treat exotic pets like rabbits and reptiles?

Yes! At Garth Animal Hospital in Baytown, we offer veterinary care for a wide range of exotic pets, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, and reptiles like bearded dragons and geckos.

Our team uses species-specific protocols and Fear Free©   handling to ensure a calm visit. We’ll check your pet’s weight, teeth, coat or skin condition, and behavior, and provide guidance on diet, habitat, and enrichment.

Exotic pets often hide signs of illness until they’re very sick. Routine exams help catch issues early—like dental disease in rabbits or parasites in reptiles—for better treatment outcomes.

Common concerns include dental overgrowth in rodents, GI stasis in rabbits, respiratory infections in ferrets, and nutritional deficiencies in reptiles. Our experienced team can diagnose and treat these conditions effectively.

Use a secure, comfortable carrier suited to your pet’s species. For temperature-sensitive animals like reptiles, keep the environment stable. If unsure, contact us—we’re happy to guide you through safe transport.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ There are simply not enough words to express how grateful we are for Dr. Lisa and her amazing staff. From the very first visit, they have shown nothing but patience, kindness, and genuine love for our dogs. They always take the time to listen, answer questions, and make sure both pets and owners feel cared for and supported. When we lost our beloved Peanut, Dr. Lisa and her staff showed a level of compassion that touched our hearts deeply. During one of the most difficult moments our family has faced, they treated us with such sincerity, understanding, and kindness. Dr. Lisa is truly a special veterinarian. Her dedication, knowledge, and heartfelt care are evident in everything she does. We are so thankful to have a veterinary team that treats our pets like family and stands beside us through both the happy moments and the heartbreaking ones. Thank you, Dr. Lisa and staff, for loving our dogs, and for being such a blessing to our family. We will always appreciate everything you have done for us. ❤️🐾 With heartfelt gratitude, Coy, Sandy, Marley, Macy and Chico Adams ❤️🐾

I recently moved to the area and was looking for a new veterinarian. After doing some research, I found Garth Animal Hospital, and I'm so glad I did. The veterinarian and staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. My dog can be a little anxious during vet visits, but the team is always patient, understanding, and caring, which makes the experience much less stressful for both of us.

This is our 3rd visit to this clinic and the experience surpassed our expectations. We felt comfortable with the entire staff and the vet was so gentle and thorough in explaining what was wrong with our little guy. You see the passion and dedication Dr.Lisa and the entire staff have for animals. This clinic is A++++ in everything. I hope Dr.Lisa keeps up the excellent service and continue to always treat all her customers and their animals with patience, love, compassion and kindness . I have more kitties to bring to this clinic and they have my continued support.

Huge thank you to the amazing team here! I completely messed up and accidentally booked our appointment for a week out, but when I showed up yesterday by mistake, they were so sweet and squeezed us right in. I brought my cat Maki because she hadn’t been eating. Everyone was so incredibly gentle and kind with her. They took quick care of her, figured out she was running a fever, and got her treated. Maki is already doing so much better, acting like herself, and finally eating again! It also meant the world to me that I could call back later with follow-up questions about her behavior without feeling like a bother. I'm just so grateful they made room for me and Maki.
